Chapter 48 Fame is the most important thing
Chapter 48 Fame is the most important thing
Helena remained silent for a long time before finally speaking as if resigned to her fate: "A year ago, my sister was hired at the market. They said she would be a maid for a wealthy family and would be paid a large sum of money."
"I searched for a long time. When I finally found this place, she was already buried under the rose bush in the southeast corner of the garden."
She looked up at Charlotte. "So a month ago, I entered this mansion and discovered the truth about it."
"I can't expect that slow-moving judicial system to try me. Those girls can't wait; they're already dead. So I want to do it myself!"
"My plan was to start with the guards. So I stole the Blue Tear from the collection room, hoping the Viscount would become suspicious of the guards in the mansion."
"I never expected them to imprison all the guards and even bring in the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. But the die is cast, and I have no choice but to continue."
Her gaze shifted from Charlotte to Leon, then back to Charlotte.
"Those four maids were there voluntarily. They knew I needed four lives to activate the magic circle, and they said, 'Since we're suffering anyway, we might as well do something quick before we die.' I agreed to help them create an opportunity for them to kill the Viscount."
"I didn't know those servants had ever reported it... I thought they just remained silent and stood by, watching those girls being dragged into the basement, and then pretending nothing had happened."
"I'm willing to go to hell and kowtow to them to admit my mistakes."
"No need," Charlotte said calmly. "They're not dead. But some of them aren't innocent either; keeping them alive is just to better judge them."
Helena suddenly looked up, her expression full of confusion.
In her view, after she activated that life alchemy magic, everyone in the entire mansion should have turned into a puddle of pus, unless the other party's sequence level was higher than hers.
Although she didn't know why the man in front of her was unaffected, Helena only thought that he had a special constitution or possessed abilities that she was unaware of.
But what about the other people in the mansion?
Charlotte then continued, "Your magic circle can't drain their life force; at most, it will make them unconscious for a few hours."
Helena's magic circle did not kill anyone.
The old maids were still alive, as were the four maids who had assisted her. She thought she had dragged everyone down with her, but in the end, she was the only one standing in the dock.
Li Ang thought of the maids in the basement. Could it be that Charlotte's abilities had also saved their lives?
"I see. Thank you." Helena bowed sincerely to Charlotte and said, "I have one last request: I will bear all the blame for this case myself. Please spare the maids."
"Can."
After Charlotte finished speaking, she turned to look at Sherry, "Sherry Eckert."
Shirley walked up to her. "I'm here."
"On behalf of the Detective Association, I hereby formally arrest Helena. Charges: use of forbidden magic, endangering public safety, and illegally activating the Life Alchemy Magic Circle."
Charlotte pulled a document from her pocket; the bottom right corner of the manila envelope bore the Detective Association's seal.
"This is an arrest warrant from the Detective Association. Not from the Ministry of Public Security." She placed the envelope on the table and pushed it towards Helena. "You won't be hanged. You'll be imprisoned in the Association's own prison, where you'll serve your sentence. The term will depend on your crime and your level of cooperation."
"Thank you." Helena instantly understood that Charlotte had done this on purpose.
If she were to take full responsibility for the case, the mere act of killing a nobleman would be enough to prompt the Ministry of Public Security to intervene and burn her alive to appease the anger of the other nobles.
However, if it were the Detective Association, as long as Helena cooperated, she would simply be locked up in the association's specially made prison, and her life would not be in danger.
Moreover, they have enough three meals a day and one day a week for fresh air.
At that moment, Shirley took out a pair of specially made silver handcuffs from her pocket and squatted down.
"Hand out."
Helena extended her two small wrists, and Sherry simply slipped the handcuffs onto them. The handcuffs then shrank, and in the blink of an eye, they were firmly cuffed to Sherry's wrists.
"Was your change in form passive or active? If it was passive, remember to tell me in advance. Otherwise, your wrist will be broken."
"It's proactive. However, there's a cooldown period."
Sherry lifted Helena up again, but this time the movement was noticeably gentler.
"Take her away." Charlotte stood up, the chair making a soft rustling sound on the carpet as she moved. "The association's people will be here soon, and I've also notified the medical department."
"Okay." Sherry picked up Helena and left first, her short blue hair swaying in the corridor light before disappearing around the corner of the stairs.
Charlotte and Leon were left alone in the living room.
"Is there anything else you want to ask?" Charlotte turned to look at him.
"Are you sure you want her to take all the blame? I haven't seen you talk to Shirley about it."
While Leon did feel a pang of sympathy for the four maids, these women had just killed the Viscount. Was Charlotte really willing to step in and save them all?
Is the other party really that kind?
It was as if Li Ang was seeing this woman for the first time.
"Pochi, do you think a witch who committed the heinous crime of murdering a nobleman would be more appealing to the public, or a story of four maids murdering a nobleman out of dissatisfaction with their employer?"
"It should be the former," Li Ang replied.
Although he doesn't usually buy newspapers, mainly because he can't afford them, there's no doubt that he would be curious when he heard the newsboy recount the former's deeds.
As for maids killing their employers, that's too commonplace; it's rare, but it does happen.
"That's right. For me, fame is more important than anything else. As for the truth, does it even matter?"
"I think it's quite important. At least we shouldn't end up with any forced confessions," Li Ang remarked subconsciously.
Charlotte's statement sounded somewhat strange, a bit like that of a certain detective, but then again, she is indeed a famous detective girl, so it doesn't seem wrong.
Charlotte glared at Li Ang's words, "Do you think I'm one of those incompetent guys? What I said just now was on the premise of finding the real culprit."
"I see. But why are you so obsessed with fame?"
Li Ang recalled that when he first met Charlotte, it was because of a case involving a cult sacrifice. Charlotte then took all the credit for the case and gained considerable fame.
Now, in order to gain even greater fame, he agreed to Helena's request and pinned all the blame on her.
What is the purpose of this?
